Digital Transformation and Decolonize Media in Egypt

This chapter demonstrates the actual possibilities of the digital revolution to dismantle the Westernization model through a historical and realistic path to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the current status of the media system in Egyptian society and the possible roles of new media technologies in social and political change. This presentation includes journalism's evolution in Egypt in the nineteenth century and the most important characteristics that distinguished it and stayed as an essential nature for decades (Seddiq in Egyptian journalism in the nineteenth century. History, and Editorials, Al-Shorouq International Bookstore, 2006). Then we move to the circumstances that surrounded the Egyptian media in the twentieth century and the basic stages it went through until it reached the 2011 January 25th revolution and how it impacted the Egyptian media system regarding the concepts of communication freedom, alternative media platforms, and public awareness of the critical use of media content (Hamanaka in Democratization 27:777–796, 2020; Osman and Samei in Global Media Journal-German Edition 2(1), 2012).
