Decolonial Constructions and Negotiations of Ethnic and Transnational Identities: The Case of Young Igbo Adults

This chapter uses decolonial discourse to examine the phenomenological lived experiences of second-generation young Igbo (SGI) adults in the United States. The purpose of this approach is to understand how they construct and negotiate their ethnic and transnational identities. In the process, the analysis also highlights the dialectical tension and communication between SGIs and their parents. Twelve in-depth interviews, a focus group, and personal observation, revealed through the six emergent themes how SGIs incorporate a decolonial discourse lens for interpreting their ethnic (Igbo) and transnational identities.
