Soil Stress Ecology: Concept, Impacts, and Management Strategies

Stress ecology of soil examines how various stressors (wide range of abiotic and biotic stressors) impact soil ecosystems, including their physical, chemical, and biological properties, and subsequently affect plant and microbial communities. Soil interacts dynamically with environmental factors, and these interactions influence its functionality and ecological balance. Understanding soil stress ecology is crucial for enhancing soil health, agricultural productivity, and environmental sustainability. The stress ecology of soil urges on maintaining soil ecosystem balance amid natural and anthropogenic pressures. Stressors can negatively affect soil biota, altering biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and essential agricultural services such as nutrient cycling, soil fertility, and pest regulation, as detailed in this chapter.
