Acute Stroke Treatment: Thrombolytics

The cornerstone of acute stroke treatment is thrombolytic therapy. Timely identification of stroke symptoms, determining eligibility for treatment, and rapid administration of therapy have been shown to dramatically improve outcomes following strokes. This chapter will review the history behind the two main thrombolytic agents, clinical criteria and contraindications, details on administration, and how to care for patients after treatment.
