Inpatient Stroke Workup

After admission to the hospital for stroke, patients need a thorough workup to identify the mechanism. Understanding the mechanism guides the appropriate secondary prevention plan to reduce the risk of further strokes. This workup consists of vascular imaging, brain imaging, a cardiac evaluation, and in the appropriate circumstances can include malignancy screening, hematologic evaluation, infectious disease management, ophthalmologic evaluation, and rheumatologic evaluation.
