Transient Ischemic Attack

A transient ischemic attack is an acute onset of neurological symptoms due to an interruption of cerebral blood flow that fully resolves quickly. Given the transitory nature of symptoms, however, it can be difficult to diagnose. While the symptoms may not seem urgent and are not painful, a true transient ischemic attack represents a higher risk of recurrent stroke, often within the next few days. An urgent evaluation helps prevent future strokes. This chapter will discuss the definition, epidemiology, and risk factors of transient ischemic attack, as well as the components of a comprehensive evaluation and proper secondary stroke prevention strategies.
