Conclusion

This is the final chapter of the book and looks back at the question of how and to what extent the concept of neoliberalism can be used to understand marketisation in HE. It argues that there is scope for the use of the concept of neoliberalism, but it will not be applicable in all areas. Also, at least three distinct approaches to the concept of neoliberalism can be used to understand more specifically the role of neoliberalism. This chapter reflects on what these arguments mean for our understanding of marketisation and neoliberalism. The chapter ends with an alternative framing of the role of neoliberalism in HE, which draws on wider changes in society’s understanding of the purpose of universities.
