Ionic Hydraulic Fluids as Potential Hydraulics Fluid for Aviation

In the field of Hydraulic Drive Technology, different types of hydraulic fluid are used for different applications. Since the operating conditions of hydraulic systems are becoming more and more demanding, hydraulic fluids must also adapt to this. The latter can be achieved through the continuous development of the fluids themselves, e.g. by using better additives, or by finding another, more suitable hydraulic fluid. In recent decades, ionic liquids, which have excellent individual physicochemical properties, have started to be used increasingly in various fields of application. Today, we treat them as high-tech liquids for specific purposes of use. Due to their excellent individual properties, in the last decade, the possibilities of use in the increasingly demanding field of Hydraulic Fluids have also begun to be tested. Thus, after more than a decade of development and the search for a suitable ionic fluid, ionic hydraulic fluids were developed for use in hydraulic systems. Due to their excellent properties, the first examples of successful practical use were experienced in the field of Hydraulic Machines and Devices in Metallurgy. As high-tech hydraulic fluids, due to their excellent properties, they are also suitable for other areas of application, e.g. potentially also in the demanding field of Aviation. The paper summarises briefly the excellent properties of ionic hydraulic fluids, which are also suitable for potential use in the field of Aviation. Based on a comparison of the properties of the hydraulic fluids currently used in aviation and the current state of the properties of ionic hydraulic fluids, the properties are derived that may still need to be improved for this purpose of use.
