This chapter introduces the Botnet Defense System (BDS), a cybersecurity system that utilizes white-hat botnets to exterminate malicious botnets. First, the concept, system configuration, and operation of the BDS are described. Next, white-hat botnets and strategies for building and operating them are explained. A formal approach has been taken to the study of BDS. Modeling, analysis, and simulation evaluation using agent-oriented Petri nets are described. Then, an implementation of a prototype of BDS using the Mirai source code is presented. Finally, future challenges and perspectives are discussed.
