Silicon Based Materials

Si and Si-derivative materials have high potential for applications in Li-ion and Li–S battery anodes because of their large theoretical capacities and low operating voltages. However, the large volume change and side reactions during charge–discharge process are obstacles to their application. Many articles have reported different ways to solve these problems. This chapter summarizes the methods to stabilize Si for utilization in Lithium battery anode: surface coating, usage of binder with self-healing properties, and composites fabrication. Finally, the application of Si and its derivatives in the anode of solid-state and conventional Li–S batteries is also summarized and discussed.
