摘要

The topic of biomechanics and biomaterials within orthopedics brings together physics, human biology, and engineering within the musculoskeletal system to describe how forces allow the human body to move and interact with the world. When discussing the orthopedic principles of biomechanics and biomaterials, it is important to first begin with a set of definitions that apply to commonly used terms within this field that are central to all discussions involving physics and engineering. This chapter first defines a set of common terms to create a shared language to describe biomechanics and biomaterials. In addition, several free body diagrams are provided to illustrate applications of biomechanics within orthopedics. Finally, high yield concepts involving biomaterials and tissues that are summarized with specific focus on their application within the field of orthopedic surgery.
