A Degrowth-Oriented Circular Society for Plastics

The circular economy (CE) has recently been proposed as a key solution to the global plastic waste problem. However, mainstream CE proposals have many fundamental limitations as they focus on technological solutions to increase economic growth on a finite planet, despite 50 years of evidence proving that decoupling economic growth from environmental degradation is neither happening nor likely to ever happen on a sufficient scale to prevent resource shortages, biodiversity collapse, and climate breakdown. Moreover, mainstream CE proposals do not address social justice and political empowerment considerations. They could thus end up replicating and exacerbating current patterns of social inequity, exploitation, and domination along racial, gender, class, sex, ethnic, and other social categories. In this chapter, we propose a degrowth-oriented circular society, which not only includes social aspects but also seeks to build a system that respects the natural cycles and biophysical limits of the Earth. By looking at food plastic packaging, as a case study, this chapter presents what a degrowth-oriented circular society would entail. While much has been written on technocentric CE solutions for the plastic sector, much less has been written from a degrowth perspective. This chapter thus fills the above research gap by answering the following research question: what is the degrowth approach to the transition to a circular economy for food packaging? To answer this question, this chapter first reviews the key drivers of the food packaging problem and then poses tangible degrowth-oriented solutions to address these problems at their roots. This chapter expands the imaginary regarding the plastic packaging problem and looks beyond growth-driven CE solutions to advance a socially just and environmentally sustainable society. It thereby brings critical insights and recommendations that are valuable for academics and practitioners alike.
