Learning Strategies

  • Deborah Kramer

摘要

This chapter introduces a set of learning strategies that have been demonstrated to be effective at concept-based and content-based learning. They help the student internalize the learning to be able to implement it in clinical practice. These strategies can be used by the mentorship program director in mentorship training sessions as techniques for mentors to use in their mentorship sessions with mentees and in their own learnings. This chapter first considers mindset and motivation because they are foundational to learning. A success mindset is essential for strong motivation. Next, the chapter covers learning strategies and learning styles. Each individual student has their own learning style, as well as their own strengths and challenges that must be taken into account. After a review of student learning strategies and learning styles, this chapter introduces a set of tools designed to tailor learning strategies to individual learning styles. A set of active teaching techniques are introduced such as test-taking, concept-mapping, role-playing, virtual reality, simulation, and reflection. Additionally, the chapter covers how to address the hidden factors that are often the root cause of academic difficulties, such as poor study habits and time-management skills, lack of exercise and sleep, and test anxiety.
