Why Academic Medicine?
摘要
In Chap. 1 , we define ‘academic medicine’ and describe the unique mission and aims that differentiate academic medicine from community healthcare. Primary distinguishing features include the missions and central roles of teaching and research occupied by ‘faculty’ members. Whereas community healthcare providers are referred to as clinicians, physicians, practitioners, and the like, the term ‘faculty’ implies an academic, scholarly component. The chapter provides a high-level overview of the role of faculty members, academic medicine salaries, and the sense of purpose and fulfillment.
