Discussion and Conclusions

In this chapter, the findings presented in Chaps. 4 and 5 are analyzed and discussed in depth. The predominance of the ‘I’ in increasingly personalized fatwās hints at a radical change in the discourse of the fatwā itself, caused by the exchange of roles between muftī and mustaftī (the requester of the fatwā) However, this emerging ‘I’ appears to be a suffering ‘I,’ paralyzed by uncertainty and in need of reassurance and legitimization. It is argued, however, that this state is not peculiar to young Muslims, but is a global phenomenon that characterizes the crisis of modernity, to which Muslims react in their own way, for example, by resorting to the fatwā.
