NVivo is a code-and-retrieve program whereby coded material is retrieved using queries to get a systematic overview of a specific topic in your data. That makes the query tools one of the most important tools in the program. NVivo has eight different types of queries, each performing different types of searches in a project. The chapter presents each query type and illustrates its functioning with an example. Specific attention is paid to the output regulation with the “spread to” option, which determines how researchers can gain insights into the retrieved coded references. The chapter also shows how users can divert query results to codes, i.e. how queries can be used to code (new) data.
