Developing a Competitive Residency Application

Applications to surgical residency can seem like an arms race. It can be overwhelming trying to assess whether your application is competitive. Mentors and program directors (PD) are a helpful resource, and medical students should meet with them once the decision is made to pursue a surgical specialty. Ideally, you will have experiences and accomplishments from your pre-clinical years that will enhance your application; however, we see many successful applicants who realize late in their third year that they want to pursue a surgical career and need to bolster their curriculum vitae (CV) in a short amount of time. Fortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all or “ideal” applicant to surgery, and programs screen and select residents based on factors that may be biased (Lipman JM, J Grad Med Educ. 15:652–668, 2023). As challenging as it may be, try not to compare yourself to your peers. Focus on your strengths, what makes you unique, what you will contribute to a program, and what you can do before the application is due. The current chapter will give you guidance to help you become the best applicant you can be. Here, we outline a framework that can organize your approach to developing a competitive residency application for a future in academic surgery.
