This chapter discusses how Roberto Schwarz mobilizes Georg Lukács’s writings on realism, and Theodor W. AdornoAdorno, Theodor W. writings on modernismModernism, to understand the mutations of the novel form in Machado de Assis. In this way, the chapter highlights Schwarz’s contribution to both the critique of Realism and the theory of the novel from a ‘systemic’ perspective.
