Effects of Climate Change and Food Security on Sustainable Agricultural Development and Potential Solutions: Evidence from China

Due to rapid changes in industrialization and urbanization, climate change has been an important issue that impedes sustainable development. Another unavoidable factor related to the national economy and people’s livelihood is food security. It is a global issue, particularly in developing countries. Considering these adverse effects, we investigated the impacts of climate and food security on China’s production efficiency, productivity growth, and sustainable agricultural development. Overall, we provided possible solutions addressing these dilemmas, which may significantly impact efficiency promotion and technological progress. To address these issues, we introduced the Slack-based approach to quantify the inefficiency of the overall agricultural production. Besides, we further analyzed the variable-specific decomposition. Results suggest that, with climate change and food security constraints, China’s agricultural inefficiency is 0.61, mainly attributed to food security constraints (0.29). In this chapter, we tried to provide solutions for poverty alleviation, awareness creation, intelligent agricultural extension, and biotechnology generalization.
