Precision Agriculture as a Coping Strategy for Climatic Challenges

摘要

The agriculture sector is suffering from changing climatic factors. Although it is a global phenomenon, poor regions are more at risk. In coming years, livestock and health will be the most affected sectors and they may get damaged even at 1.5 °C rise in temperature during global warming. This deteriorating situation, already happening in many vulnerable countries, can be coped with by incorporating precision agriculture concepts, improving technology, adopting new policies, and utilizing indigenous knowledge. In the present scenario, precision agriculture is one of the leading management strategies to deal with unexpected climatic challenges. Precision agriculture strategies rely on technologies and emphasize on digitalization and Internet of Things (IoT) for rapid and precise information to improve productivity and farm sustainability. These modern and state-of-the-art technologies are available in developed countries but still lack in many developing countries, and without these sophisticated technologies agriculture production in developing countries cannot be increased. Developing regions like South Asian nations need to increase agriculture production up to 60–70% by 2050 to ensure food security. Initial investment is required to achieve the target, through adopting recommended practices and technologies. As a result, it is estimated that there will be significant economic effects in the form of cost and crop production by adopting the concept of precision agriculture.
