Meteorological Drought Analysis in Kızılırmak Basin, Türkiye

Drought is a complicated and very hazardous natural disaster. It is generally defined as a prolonged duration of low precipitation in a region, adversely affecting on agriculture, water supply, infrastructure, socio-economic life, and overall development. In the literature, drought is classified into four categories: meteorological, hydrological, agricultural, and socio-economic. Meteorological drought denotes precipitation deficits when they fall noticeably below the normal levels. In this research, meteorological drought analysis of Kızılırmak Basin, the second biggest basin in Türkiye, is conducted. The analysis is performed using mean monthly precipitation records from 7 stations in Kızılırmak Basin and rainfall data were received from the General Directorate of Meteorology of Türkiye. The analysis has been carried out using the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) for the time scales 1, 3, 12 and 24 months. In this study, the occurence of wet \((SPI\ge 0)\) and on the other hand Mild Drought (MD), Moderate Drought (MOD), Severe drought (SD) and extreme drought (ED) have been investigated. Findings have demonstrated that for all stations and in all time scale, Wet and MD have the highest percentage of occurence. Among MOD, SD and ED; MOD has the highest percentage of occurrence (89.3%) for all station in all time scale. Consequently, these findings have demonstrated the necessity of implementing an efficient water resources management plan to protect the basin from potential drought impacts.
