Strengths-Based Approaches Addressing Stigma and Trauma: How Do We Address Stigma and Develop Trauma-Informed Approaches?

Stigma originated from a Greek word meaning tattoo or puncture mark made with a sharp object. This arose from the practice of branding slaves to ensure recognition of their status. Unfortunately, this notion of a mark, signifying a certain status is the prevailing understanding and daily experience of stigma by many people who use substances in modern times. This chapter addresses stigma at an individual and institutional level. It provides guidance to address this in written and spoken language and in services. The chapter also provides an in-depth discussion of trauma from adverse childhood experiences to adverse community environments. It discusses the features of strength- based and trauma-informed approaches for services and schools. It explores a response to vicarious trauma in staff and concludes with two case studies. One addressing stigma through training and one addressing trauma with a gendered lens. Trauma-informed services and practices are now essential aspects of quality service delivery.
