摘要

Initiatives to promote the integration of research in renewable energies in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Brazil are crucial steps toward building an ecosystem capable of contributing to the sustainability and economic development of the country. HEIs can play a crucial role in advancing society towards sustainable development with their fundamental pillars, structured in teaching, research, extension, leadership, and innovation activities. Therefore, education emerges as a positive influence on energy policies, highlighting the importance of educational investments as an essential part of the strategy to promote sustainable development. In this sense, this article seeks to provide an overview of the actions adopted, both directly and indirectly, by HEIs in many countries that promote the study and application of renewable energies on their campuses, academic communities, and so forth. The article also highlights actions and policies that have shown good results and/or need to be implemented to advance sustainable goals. Examples from two HEIs located in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, show how their actions and strategies aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and foster regional development by creating jobs and attracting investments. Moreover, this creates opportunities for entrepreneurship and innovation while positioning the HEI as a significant player in this area.
