Supporting Research and Education Stakeholders in Meeting the Sustainable Development Goals Through the HESI SDG Publishers Compact Fellows

The communication of research relating to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is an essential aspect of delivering meaningful change towards the goals. Here, we outline the strategy and activities of the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Publishers Compact Fellows who are a diverse and action-oriented group of volunteers. International representatives across educational sectors including academia, publishing, technology, and related industries e-meet weekly. During general meetings and topical working groups, the Fellows collaborate to drive progress toward the United Nations SDGs by organizing the provision of advice, training, practical tools, and actionable guidance. In this chapter, we share some of the challenges and opportunities that these stakeholders face while supporting the aims of the SDGs, as well as a brief history of the creation of the SDG Publishers Compact and the Fellows. We outline the role of the interdisciplinary Fellows in supporting each stakeholder group alongside our philosophy of driving this emerging international trend through both ‘quick wins’ and system change. We then highlight our top tips, our event series, and the role of the Fellows group itself in structuring public engagement with the SDGs within and across international institutions, education, research, and publishing. Taken together, this chapter provides practical suggestions around how to build on the momentum generated by the SDG Publishers Compact, and the tools provided by the Fellows.
