Role of Higher Education Institutions in Promoting Sustainable Development Goals Through Research, Teaching and Outreach

This book chapter explores the role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through research, teaching, and outreach. A Systematic Literature Review was conducted by data collected from databases focusing on relevant peer-reviewed research papers published between 2018 and October 2023. The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods, including Descending Hierarchical Classification (DHC) and chi-square inferential statistics. Among the main results are that HEIs foster multidisciplinary collaborations, employ novel research approaches, and facilitate knowledge dissemination. They equip future professionals with the skills and competencies to address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and cultivate students who can serve as catalysts for change. The chapter also addresses the integration of sustainability principles into teaching practices and curricula, and their efforts to connect with communities, legislators, and industry stakeholders through outreach activities. HEIs have the potential to significantly impact society, the economy, and the environment. However, there are gaps in the strategic approach and more research is needed, especially in developing countries. HEIs can foster a society that values sustainability, inclusivity, and collective well-being through outreach activities.
