Powering Sustainable Development: The Critical Role of Energy Research
摘要
Energy is a critical component of sustainable development, and energy research is essential to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 7, “Affordable and clean energy.” Energy is also vital for achieving other SDGs due to its strong links to human health and well-being, economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social development. Nonetheless, current energy systems are rarely sustainable, primarily because they rely on fossil fuels. Hence, there is a pressing need for research to develop sustainable energy solutions. This chapter highlights two essential aspects of energy’s role in sustainable development research. First, research should concentrate on making energy more sustainable, emphasizing the need for a green energy transition. Second, research should focus on the relationship between energy and other SDGs, specifically how sustainable energy can contribute to achieving them. The paper discusses the significance of sustainable energy solutions, such as wind, solar, hydro, and biomass, as well as the crucial role of energy efficiency in reducing energy consumption. Additionally, the chapter explores the link between energy and poverty, education, gender equality, and health, emphasizing how sustainable energy can help achieve these SDGs. The chapter also stresses the need for international cooperation to achieve SDGs.
