Demonstrating Energy Transitions in Micro Industries: Sustainability of Energy Justice

Micro-enterprises in India engage a significant proportion of formal and informal employment, including marginalized communities. Initiating and fostering clean energy transitions in this sector throws open a plethora of challenges and opportunities. Faced with barriers of low productivity, poor wages, and inaccessibility to credit and inadequate energy inputs, clean energy transition, which receives the support of the national government, philanthropies and other private players, offers transformative growth to the enterprises, while ensuring energy justice and inclusivity. However, despite a growing interest to adopt renewable energy technologies, such as solar, the inherent vulnerability of these communities renders these enterprises risk-averse, and there is a sense of trepidation and apprehension. The fear of incurring debt and the possibility of credit risks loom large. With the objective to address these challenges, an on-going initiative- Sustainable Energy in Micro-enterprises for Income and Livelihood Enhancement (SMILE)- adopts a practical pathway based on the demonstration effect, wherein relatively larger and more stable micro-enterprises, which exhibit greater propensity to undertake transformative endeavours, were chosen as pioneers for change. By empowering these enterprises with renewable energy technologies and showcasing the tangible benefits that ensue, the success of the demonstration projects showcased to the marginalised communities, the positive impact on productivity, reliability, and cost savings. The initial reservations were gradually replaced with newfound conviction and eagerness to embrace sustainable energy solutions, leading to a spillover effect on neighbouring microenterprises. This paper explores the interplay of demonstration and spillover effects as a powerful tool for ensuring the sustainability of energy justice.
