Electrocatalytic Materials in Physiotherapy: Advancing Rehabilitation and Pain Management

Electrocatalytic materials, renowned for their ability to facilitate electrochemical reactions, are finding innovative applications in the realm of physiotherapy. This chapter delves into the burgeoning connection between electrocatalytic materials and physiotherapy, shedding light on their pivotal role in enhancing therapeutic outcomes. Specifically, these materials hold promise in pain management, muscle stimulation, and tissue regeneration. In pain management, they can enhance the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) devices, providing improved pain relief for patients. In muscle rehabilitation, they offer the potential to optimize neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) devices, aiding in muscle strengthening and reeducation. Furthermore, electrocatalytic materials may contribute to wound healing and tissue regeneration through their application in electrotherapy techniques such as pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy. Nevertheless, challenges surrounding biocompatibility and longterm stability must be addressed, and further research is required to refine device design and performance. As the field progresses, electrocatalytic materials are poised to play an increasingly crucial role in advancing the practice of physiotherapy, ultimately benefiting patients and healthcare providers alike.
