Exploring Chitosan Hydrogels: Electrochemical Detection to Biomedical Applications

Chitosan is biocompatible, and has the remarkable capacity to undergo phase transitions in response to variations in pH and temperature. Due to its bio-adhesive properties, of chitosan, it attaches itself to surfaces that have negative charges, making it a very effective and efficient carrier for pharmaceuticals. Chitosan derivatives-based hydrogels exhibit sensitivity to changes in pH and temperature, making them very suitable for these specific applications. Chitosan-based materials are used to enhance wound healing because of their ability to break down naturally, compatibility with living tissue, and capacity to expedite the healing process. Due of these characteristics, chitosan is applicable in the field of tissue engineering. Chitosan hydrogels have the potential to be used in tissue engineering for the purpose of regenerating damaged or obliterated tissues. These hydrogels have been identified as a suitable material for tissue engineering. This review article provides a comprehensive review of different uses of chitosan hydrogels. This review highlights the potential of chitosan hydrogels in sensing, biosensing, wound healing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering applications.
