Each type has its advantages and considerations, such as duration of use, risk of infection, and ease of placement. There are risks associated with central venous catheterization in pediatric patients. Potential complications include infection, thrombosis, venous perforation, pneumothorax, and arterial puncture. These complications can have significant consequences for the patient’s health and may require additional interventions or lengthy hospital stay. To improve safety and success rates of central venous access procedures in pediatric patients, the use of ultrasound guidance has become the gold-standard technique. Ultrasound-guided puncture provides real-time visualization of the target vein, surrounding anatomy, and potential complications. This technique allows precise identification of the vessel, reducing the risk of accidental arterial puncture and improving the overall success rate of catheter placement. Ultrasound guidance also helps with the assessment of vessel compressibility, identification of anatomical variations, and detection of potential thrombosis. In conclusion, central venous access in pediatric patients is a vital procedure that requires careful consideration of types of catheters, potential complications, and the use of ultrasound-guided puncture.
