Youth Substance Use and Addiction: An African Perspective Toward Better Quality of Life

Substance use and addiction have long been a global health concern, and in Africa, these issues are growing among vulnerable youth. The range of substances available to young people has expanded, including cannabis, cough syrups, methamphetamine, heroin, tranquilizers, opioids, cocaine, ecstasy, and others. Early substance use and addiction can lead to lifelong consequences such as poor academic performance, criminal activities, unemployment, health problems, and societal costs. With a rising youth population, economic challenges, and civil unrest in some regions, the social and health burdens associated with substance use disorders are increasing in Africa. However, efforts to address the problem have been generally ineffective. This chapter examines three case studies to provide a detailed understanding of substance use among African youth, its impact, and intervention strategies. The findings can inform future research and guide the development of interventions, programs, and policies to improve the well-being of at-risk youth in Africa and around the world.
