High-altitude tourism and adventure activities have gained significant popularity in recent years. The allure of exploring remote, mountainous regions comes with its own set of health risks and sustainability challenges. High-altitude tourism, featuring activities such as trekking, mountaineering and skiing in mountainous regions, has witnessed a surge in popularity, drawing adventurers from around the globe. While these lofty landscapes offer unparalleled beauty and experiences, the high-altitude environment poses substantial health risks to visitors. Simultaneously, high-altitude destinations often grapple with sustainability challenges due to their fragile ecosystems. The effective management of health emergencies and medical assistance in these remote areas is of paramount importance. High-altitude adventure tourism carries inherent health risks that demand a nuanced understanding. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), characterized by symptoms such as headache, nausea, and fatigue, is prevalent among visitors ascending rapidly to high altitudes. High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), both potentially life-threatening conditions, can manifest when the body struggles to acclimatize. The purpose of this study is to thoroughly explore the link between high-altitude adventure, the health effects for visitors, the sustainability of this form of tourism, and the handling of medical emergencies and support. This chapter aims to present a comprehensive picture of high-altitude adventure tourism by addressing these linked issues and emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices and sufficient healthcare treatment.
