A Digital Photo Archive and Its Potential for the Preservation of Cultural Memory and Built Heritage

This contribution introduces the Syrian Heritage Archive ProjectSyrian Heritage Archive Project, an independent, digital, multilingual, open access photo archive on SyriaSyria’s cultural heritageHeritage. It aims on highlighting the significance of collecting, documenting and evaluating of past and present memories of all kind such as photos, documents or oral testimonies for processes of preserving, maintaining and rehabilitating tangible and intangible cultural heritageHeritage after a crisisCrisis. Several projects focussing on AleppoAleppo, which are linked to the archive, are presented to display the importance of such an archive for scientific research as well as public outreach to raise the awareness for the safeguarding of cultural heritageHeritage. Moreover, these collections gain a major importance for the creation of a common cultural memoryMemory.
