Management of Splenic Abscess in Patients with Infective Endocarditis

Splenic abscess from infective endocarditis is a rare clinical entity. Patients can present with variable signs and symptoms. Management includes antibiotics along with source control. Source control measures include drain placement, partial splenectomy with abscess drainage, and splenectomy. There is no consensus regarding the timing of the splenectomy in comparison to the timing for heart valve repair for infective endocarditis. Mortality in these patients is very high if surgical interventions are not performed.
