Conclusion: Characteristics of the Zine’s Psychogeographical Mediality

This concluding chapter synthesises the findings from four case studies on the psychogeographical characteristics of zines. It highlights how zines embody psychogeographical properties due to their intermedial and palimpsestic nature. The chapter outlines three key characteristics identified through the analysis: the semiotic and material quality of spaces as palimpsests, the use of zines as subversive tools to challenge conventional knowledge production, and their role in processing trauma through the interplay of memory and space. These characteristics emphasise the alignment of zine-making with psychogeographical practices, such as the exploration of liminal spaces and the blending of words and images to navigate between reality and imagination. Furthermore, it discusses how contemporary zine practices extend the scope of psychogeography beyond its traditional confines, promoting a decentralised and inclusive approach. This allows for a new form of psychogeography that is accessible to diverse voices and experiences, thus enriching the discourse with a variety of perspectives and narratives.
