Affinity to Assemble: Zines as Walking Travelogues

This chapter examines the resurgence of zine culture as a key medium for contemporary psychogeographical documentation. It explores the physicality and diversity of zines, highlighting their role in merging text, images and form innovatively. The chapter emphasises the unique interaction between the creator and the reader facilitated by the tangible nature of zines, likening their distribution to “gift-giving”. This interaction fosters a community-based exchange, distinct from commercial publishing. Zines can serve as forms of “autotopography” (González), personal mappings that connect the creator’s geographical and psychological journeys with the reader. This chapter argues that zines are integral to psychogeography, embodying the spirit of the discipline through their creation, form and community engagement.
