Introduction: New Selves Embarking upon Old Paths

Exploring the intersection of zine culture with psychogeography, Self-Published Psychogeographies approaches zines as media that document and interpret spatial experiences. This introductory chapter presents the writer as both a zine creator and a walker, exploring the connection between these roles in contemporary zine communities. It stresses the importance of understanding psychogeography in zines, the main subject of this study, by recognising their distinct physical and media characteristics, along with their autobiographical elements. This study approaches zines as literary texts, taking into account the medium’s specific self-published, ephemeral nature, which makes it a vehicle for resistance and subversion. It argues that through the physicality of walking intertwined with the experimentality enabled by self-publishing, zines offer alternative perspectives on space and movement, challenging conventional geographic narratives as forms of a “new psychogeography” (Richardson).
