New Concepts in the Biological Control of Postharvest Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables

Postharvest diseases are a major threat to the quality and marketability of fruit and vegetables (F&V), leading to substantial global economic losses. These diseases include a broad spectrum of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections that develop during marketing, transportation, and storage. Traditional methods of using synthetic chemical pesticides have been the standard approach for over a century. However, there are growing concerns about the environmental impact and consumer demand for organic produce. As a result, new biocontrol approaches are emerging as promising alternatives for postharvest disease management. In this chapter, the potential use of biocontrols in postharvest disease management in F&V and new approaches and technologies such as genetic engineering are discussed. This chapter includes modern strategies designed to enhance the capabilities of antagonistic biocontrols. Furthermore, the commercialization processes and major bottlenecks in the practical application of the biocontrols are discussed.
