Emerging Technologies for Storage of Horticultural Crops: State of the Art and Recent Developments

In 2021, world fruit and vegetable production including roots and tubers reached ca. 2060 million tonnes. The total fruit production reached 910 million tonnes, and banana was the most produced fruit (125 million tonnes) followed by watermelons (102 million tonnes), apples (93 million tonnes), oranges (76 million tonnes), and grapes (74 million tonnes). The global production of vegetables reached 1150 million tonnes and tomatoes was the most produced vegetable with 189 million tonnes, followed by onions including shallots (107 million tonnes), cucumbers including gherkins (93 million tonnes), cabbages (71 million tonnes), and eggplants (59 million tonnes) (FAO, 2021).
