The analysis of saliva in forensic investigations is of utmost importance, as it offers significant information regarding a suspect’s personal identification, physical condition, and potential connection to a criminal activity. The salivary glands produce saliva, a fluid that comprises a diverse combination of enzymes, proteins, and genetic material, rendering it an extensive and valuable repository of forensic data. The analysis of saliva is not without its challenges. The stability of saliva samples can be influenced by various environmental factors, including temperature and exposure to contaminants. It should be mentioned that the analysis process can become more complex if there are inhibitors or low DNA concentrations present. In order to achieve accurate and reliable results, it is necessary to handle, preserve, and process saliva samples with great care when overcoming these challenges. The continuous advancements in forensic technology have been instrumental in further enhancing the capabilities of analyzing saliva. The efficiency and accuracy of forensic examinations are enhanced by incorporating automated systems, improved DNA extraction methods, and the utilization of more sensitive testing techniques. Besides its role in criminal investigations, integrating saliva analysis with other forensic disciplines, such as fingerprinting and toxicology, serves to enhance its effectiveness and significance.
