摘要

There are 30,000 hospital admissions per year secondary to traumatic eye injuries, which occur commonly in patients with blunt or penetrating facial trauma. Majority of the traumas are secondary to motor vehicle collision or sports-related injury. Ocular trauma accounts for 7.5% for eye admissions in the hospital. Ocular trauma is the leading cause of noncongenital unilateral blindness in <20-year-olds and overall the second leading cause of blindness. Open-globe injury risk is highest for young adults and lowest for seniors. Patients with significant eye injuries may have grossly normal eyes on physical exam and may subsequently become apparent. Prompt diagnosis is important in preserving visual acuity and preventing complications.
