Introduction

This introductory chapter outlines the broad aims of the book. It begins by setting the scene with an outline of the significant changes in Laski's political thought and the context of them, indicating the reluctant way in which he adopted some of the key tenets of Marxism. After that initial discussion, two sections present an overview of Laski's life, political and academic career, and writings, focusing briefly on some key developments that helped shape his ideas and influence the nature of his activities. The first of those sections sketches Laski's life and work before the 1930s; the second moves on to the remainder of his life: the 1930s and 1940s. Dividing his life into these two broad sections helps draw attention to the late 1920s and early 1930s as a transitional period.
