Digital Transformation: Towards a Model for Competency-Based Governance of Digital Transformation for Boards of Directors in South Africa

The requirement for boards of directors to attain competencies in the governance of digital transformation (Dx) is increasing at the global level. As a player within the global economic landscape, South Africa must have directors with the requisite Dx governance competencies. Despite corporate governance codes, principles, standards, and legislation, Dx governance frameworks or models must be integrated into the boardroom agenda. This study explores the development of a competency-based model to guide the boards of directors in South Africa on the required Dx governance competencies. The study centered around an interpretivist epistemology with a case study design. Using a purposive sampling approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven participants. Data were analysed using the COSTA QDA technique on webQDA software. The findings concluded with three primary themes: “There is no standard definition of competence-based models for Dx governance”; “Dx governance is perceived as Information Technology Governance”; “There is a need for Dx competence at the board level.” The study recommends a model entitled “M.A.D.I.B.A”, an acronym for six constructs that could guide establishing a competency model for Dx governance. The model operates on the premise that comprehending fundamental competencies requires incorporating specific concepts.
