The Use of Digital Tools and Emerging Technologies in Qualitative Research—A Systematic Review of Literature

Digitalisation has had a profound impact on the world and has enabled new means of data collection. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the acceptance of these tools and methods for research purposes. This review examines the literature on how digitalisation has shaped qualitative research methods. A systematic literature review was conducted by searching various databases, focusing on qualitative digital tools and methods. The review included studies that reported original findings published in English between January 2018 and July 2023. The following databases were searched: Scopus, Science Direct, EBSCO host, and ProQuest Central, using the keywords “qualitative research” AND “digital data collection tools” AND “online qualitative data collection” AND (“digitisation” OR “4IR Qualitative research”). There has been a noticeable increase and shift in methodologies due to digitalisation, and qualitative researchers must continue to explore the different methods and tools available. However, digital tools also present unique challenges that require further examination. The study highlights the significance of digitalisation in revolutionising the field of qualitative research due to rapid technological advancements. More research is needed on the use of digital tools and technologies in research in emerging economies such as Africa.
