Librarians and Learning Designers on Academic Integrity: A Proactive Approach

Academic misconduct is of primary concern within higher education. Librarians and instructional designers support instructors in promoting academic integrity while mitigating against academic misconduct in many ways, such as through the incorporation of information literacy. This chapter explores how librarians and instructional designers collaborate with faculty to design and deliver courses to reduce and prevent academic misconduct. Various frameworks are explored to determine how their adoption may promote academic integrity. Some such frameworks include the ICAI Fundamental Values of Academic Integrity, the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, and the Quality Matters Course Design Rubric. Each of these frameworks provide practical considerations for course design. Drawing on existing literature and practical experience, several approaches to the design of learning experiences are discussed. The emergence of technology enabled study aids, and issues arising from them, are also briefly explored.
