Harnessing Geospatial Approaches in Air Quality Mapping and Monitoring

Globally, air pollution is a substantial environmental issue due to the detrimental effects it has on economic systems and human health. This chapter explores the potential applications of aerosol optical depth (AOD) analysis and remote sensing in order to enhance the mapping and monitoring of air quality. It investigates in particular the repercussions of air pollution regulation in this regard. Remote sensing technologies, such as optical and microwave satellite photography, furnish significant spatial and temporal information that can be applied to the assessment of air quality over vast expanses of area. The aim of this chapter is to enhance our understanding of the complexities associated with pollution sources and air quality dynamics by incorporating ground-based monitoring, improved analytical techniques and remote sensing data. Additionally, the chapter explores the examination of sophisticated data fusion methodologies and model integration with the aim of producing AOD concentrations with enhanced precision. Furthermore, the chapter provides policymakers with the requisite information to formulate efficacious policies that safeguard public health, reduce air pollution and advance sustainable development.
