Application of Remote Sensing in Natural Resource Management

Management of natural resource is basically dependent on the adaptable and operational use of remote sensing. It has reformed the monitoring and assessment of earth’s resources. Remote sensing offers essential data that enable us to make informed decisions during emerging environmental awareness. One of its key applications includes land cover mapping, which allows precise observation of urbanization, alterations in environment, and cognizant land-use planning. In the case of forest management, it is helpful in forest cover mapping and observing deforestation rates and forest biomass determination. It is essential for sustainable forestry practices and preventing illegal logging activities. In agricultural field, remote sensing technology has significant applications in detecting crop health and production for improved agriculture practices. In order to achieve food security and sustainable farming, the technology supports in the early detection of crop diseases, effective irrigation management, and resource distribution. In water resource management, remote sensing is used in monitoring the water bodies and water quality and also measuring gage water levels in rivers and reservoirs. This is essential for handling water resources efficiently and preserving the natural harmony of aquatic environments. Remote sensing has evolved into a fundamental means in natural resource management including wetlands, ecosystems, wildlife, environment, as well as climate change. In a world where natural disasters are happening more and more often, remote sensing is also a great help in managing them. It helps us understand how storms, floods, and wildfires affect the environment, so we can respond rapidly and effectively. Remotely sensed data have also a substantial use in tackling important problems such as soil erosion, protected area management, drought monitoring, and biodiversity evaluation. By utilizing this technology, we can safeguard a brighter and more ecologically aware future by better understanding, protecting, and managing the Earth’s precious natural resources. This chapter highlights the applications of remote sensing in management of natural resource in terms of data acquisition, handling, and operation from various remote sensing technologies to support the sustainable and efficient management of natural resources.
