Problems and Interrogation: Parrhesia, Truth, and Ideology
摘要
Parrhesia has always been closely linked with the idea of truth and embedded within particular ideologies; thus, it is important to have tools to examine moments of disruption to discern what constitutes parrhesia. Additionally, there were always historic problems with parrhesia such as the exclusion of some groups from citizenship; the potential for speakers to lie, manipulate, or imitate parrhesia unethically; to use parrhesia as an excuse for ignorant outspokenness that undermines freedom and democracy; or to engage in slanderous or libelous speech. For these reasons, it is important to have tools to interrogate the truth claims at the heart of parrhesiastic action, which includes interrogating the ethos of the speaker, identification, and the ethos of the truth. This set of heuristics can help identify the presence of parrhesia and allow for clearer discernment between parrhesia and other types of disruptive actions that may not serve a larger community good.
