The Courage to Speak and to Listen

  • Renea Frey

摘要

The scope of this work has demonstrated the relationship between the deep past and the present in terms of parrhesiastic action, effects, meaning, and ideology. Parrhesia remains the duty of citizenship within a functioning democracy, and as such is a concept that needs to be understood, analyzed, and enacted with the goal of promoting a larger social good, especially for those who are marginalized. Part of this endeavor is having the courage to speak up even at great risk, but it also means listening to those who call out inequalities and abuses of power while interrogating our own position within the social order. Comprehending the potential for parrhesia to reshape power relations allows citizens to discern the ethical positions of those who disrupt the status quo, leading to more informed choices to promote a just, inclusive future.
