The goal of sustainable development is to strike a balance between societal advancement and environmental protection. The demand for tools and approaches to address and mitigate these difficulties has increased over the past few decades as urbanisation, environmental degradation and socio-economic inequities have all aggravated. Geospatial technology is a key tool for connecting data-driven decision-making with sustainable progress. The present study strives to summarise the fundamental, current and potential future applications of geospatial technology in the realm of sustainable development. Geospatial technology, such as Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, spatial data analysis and data visualisation is essential for acquiring, analysing and interpreting geographical and temporal data. Precise real-time data analysis is vital for planning and policymaking to design strategies that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). GIS and comparable technologies in urban design provide optimal land use, efficient transportation networks and comprehensive city development models that cater to the needs of both individuals and the environment. Geospatial tools assist in mapping resources, predicting depletion rates and suggesting sustainable extraction methods in natural resource management. Geospatial technology has greatly improved the agricultural and water resource sectors, both of which are crucial for human existence. The system guarantees that resources are used sparingly, waste is reduced and productivity is increased across a range of applications, from managing river basins to fostering precision agriculture. Beyond these specific uses, the importance of geospatial technology in energy and catastrophe management cannot be overstated. When it comes to predicting natural disasters, developing response plans and guaranteeing resilient reconstruction, earth observation and geospatial data science have shown to be crucial. Based on spatial data, sustainable energy solutions are simultaneously being developed to reduce carbon footprints and effectively utilise renewable resources. This chapter also clarifies some case studies that support the use of geospatial technology in global sustainability initiatives. The technology has been applied in a variety of ways, demonstrating its versatility and importance. These applications range from reducing the effects of climate change to solving socio-economic inequities. Future developments are promised by the intersection of geospatial technology and sustainable development. Applications for sustainable development are expected to grow in sophistication, impact and scope as technology develops and incorporates Artificial Intelligence, big data and other innovations.
